For Single Family Homeowners

Here's a comparison of two of the most common types of AC in Hawaii's single family, multi-room homes.

Mini-Split AC

Central AC

HOW IT WORKS

Ductless. Uses an outdoor condenser unit and each in-room air handler directly and efficiently delivers cooled air.
Requires ducting to send cool air to room vents from the outdoor unit. Ducts account for 40% of energy loss and are costly to install.

HOW TEMP IS CONTROLLED

Each room is individually controlled to customize temperature, airflow, and powering down when not in use to save energy.
Each room’s thermostat tells a centralized control panel how to adjust dampers within the ductwork for air flow. It cannot power down select rooms.

THE TECHNOLOGY

Mini-split inverter / variable-speed compressors run efficiently at lower levels to maintain temp without taxing the system or wasting energy
Older Central AC systems must constantly run at max power to cool a home. However, inverter/variable-speed models are now available and are up to 50% more efficient.

MAINTENANCE

All whole home AC systems should get annual tune-ups to check refrigerant levels, clean coils/filters, and inspect for issues.
In addition to annual tune-ups, Central AC requires regular maintenance of the ducts to clear obstructions, seal air leaks, and add insulation.

ENERGY SAVINGS + INSTANT REBATES

Need just single space or spot cooling? A window AC can be an efficient choice if sized right and ENERGY STAR® certified. Get up to a $45 instant in-store rebate, learn how here.
Don’t like AC? Whole house and solar attic fans pull in cool, fresh air from the outside and expel the hot, stale air out of vents. They use 90% less energy than AC! Learn how here.
